Voting If You're in the Armed Services

I am in the Armed Forces (Army, Navy or RAF) posted abroad how do I register to vote?

Service personnel and their husbands, wives, or civil partners posted abroad can register to vote by making a service declaration. Service declarations last for three years. The declaration is available to download from the Electoral Commission’s website, or is available from your electoral registration office if you don’t have access to the internet.

You can register at the address where you would be living if you were not in the services or for an address where you have lived in the past.

You need to send your service declaration to the local electoral registration office for the address where you wish to be registered.

I am in the armed forces and serving overseas. What methods of voting are available to me?

Service voters and their husbands, wives or civil partners can vote in person or can opt to vote by post or proxy.

Postal votes are only sent out around a week before election day. If you are living abroad, it may be better to appoint a proxy to vote on your behalf as there may not be enough time for your postal vote to reach you and be sent back before voting closes.
